There are three stages of this competition: (1) Submit one or two photos that illustrate some aspect of science—natural or manufactured. A few examples would be a weather scene, machinery, stars, microscopic images, or images showing force or energy. Entrants are divided by category depending on age on March 31, 2011: 12 and under; 13 through 17; and 18 and up. (2) Online voting will occur to determine one People’s Choice winner in each age category. (3) A panel of judges will determine the winners of cash prizes, one winner in each age category.
Submit a photo on the Photo Submission Page. Each registered contestant may submit one or two photos. Please refer to the Official Rules Page. Photo submission ends at 6pm on Thursday, March 31, and online voting will begin at noon on Friday, April 1, 2011.
The prizes for the winners in each age category, as determined by the judges, are:
Ages 18 and up: $500
Ages 13-17: $250
Ages 12 and under: $100
In addition, the winner of the People’s Choice polling in each age category will receive a one-year, family membership to Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh.
Winners as selected by the judges, as well as People’s Choice winners, will be announced on the website by May 1, 2011.
Each person may submit up to two (2) original photos.

To vote in the online poll, you must create a registered account. Each registered user gets up to five (5) votes, valid between Friday, April 1 and Friday, April 15. Each user may cast all five (5) votes in one age category or may spread them across all three age categories. Users may use all five (5) votes on the same photo. Voting for your own photo is permitted.
The contest will be judged by a panel of six photography and science experts from the Southwestern Pennsylvania area. The panel of judges will use the following criteria:
