How does the Sweet Treat Challenge work?
There are three stages of this competition: (1) Submit a photo showing your decorating talents. (2) Online voting will occur to determine the five finalists. (3) The five finalists will come to GoodTaste! Pittsburgh to compete in a 4-hour decorating challenge, with a chance to win up to $1,000.

Entry: Submit a photo for the Sweet Treat Challenge by completing the Photo Submission Page. The photo should display your best decorating efforts, preferably including decorative items besides just cakes & icing. The photo can be of a cake or cupcake creation you have decorated – or it can be a creation using both. There is no maximum number of cakes/cupcakes that are allowed in your photo creation however, if the creation is a cupcake only design, it should contain a minimum of 6 cupcakes. A $10 registration donation benefits Operation Santa Claus. One photo per registered contestant only. Photo submission ends at 12 p.m., Fri., Sept., 24 & voting will begin at 5:00 p.m., Fri., Sept., 24.

Online Voting: Photographs of all submissions will be posted online from September 24th (5pm) – October 15th, so readers can vote on their favorite designs. Each vote will cost $1.00 and will be donated to Operation Santa Claus. The five submissions that receive the most votes will be named our finalists and will have the chance to win the ultimate prize – a check for $1,000. These five finalists will compete against one another at this year’s GoodTaste! Pittsburgh show, Saturday November 6, 2010.

Competition Day: The final stage of the contest is held at the GoodTaste! Pittsburgh Food & Cooking Show on Nov., 6, 2010. Contestants will be given 4 hours to complete their “Sweet Treat” holiday creation. Each creation must meet the following requirements: (1) Must be holiday-themed (any holiday of contestants choice); (2) Must be a creation containing 2 cakes and multiple cupcakes (a minimum of 6 a maximum of 12); (3) Must incorporate ten “mystery ingredients” provided (from the snack, candy, cookie family of food items). And it must be a 100% original creation.

The five finalists will be required to attend an orientation session prior to the competition where all contestants will be fully versed on the rules and regulations for competition day, and will be able to ask any and all questions they may have. The orientation will occur one week prior to the competition and is mandatory for contestants to compete at GoodTaste! for the grand prize.

What is Operation Santa Claus?
Operation Santa Claus is a cooperative charitable effort between Trib Total Media and the Salvation Army, with assistance from Shop 'n Save Supermarkets. It provides holiday meals to needy families throughout Southwestern Pennsylvania thanks to the generous donations of individuals, businesses, and other organizations. All entry fees and voting donations received on behalf of the contest will go to Operation Santa Claus.

What holiday should my submission represent?
There is no restriction or requirements. The photo you submit should illustrate your decorating abilities, but does not have to be holiday-specific. Only the final creation, decorated on-site at GoodTaste! Pittsburgh needs to be holiday themed.

Why do I have to pay a $10 registration fee?
The contestants will be competing for some big prizes, so we ask for a small registration fee/donation to benefit Operation Santa Claus.

Do I have to be a professional baker to participate?
No. Professional bakers/decorators are not eligible. You must be an amateur baker. For these purposes, “amateur” is defined as follows:

• Anyone who is an instructor, professional baker, or has a license or permit for business operating as a decorator or cake baker, should be considered ineligible.

Only amateur bakers can compete. You must be 18 years of age or older and reside within the Trib Total Media home delivery area.

Is there an age requirement to participate?
Yes. All entrants must be 18 years of age or older.

When does the voting process begin?
